Sapa in brief
Sapa is a mountain town perched on a hillside near the Chinese border, in Lao Cai province (merged with Yen Bai in 2025; Sapa is still reached via Lao Cai city). Mount Fansipan, at 3,143 m the highest mountain in Vietnam and Indochina, rises behind it. Visitors come for the terraced rice fields that cling to the hillsides, for views down the valley from hotels on the slopes, and for a taste of highland life.
Clouds roll up the hill and can swallow the town in fog, and the weather is unpredictable. Even on grey days the views can be good, as the cloud lifts and shows the landscape for a few minutes before it closes again.
What to do in Sapa
Trekking and village walks
Several walks start from the town and can be done on your own. For anything longer, hire a good guide who can lead you along forest paths to places you would never find by yourself and explain the flora, fauna and village life. Guides can tailor a trek to your fitness and time. Expect mud on trails after rain and bring waterproof shoes.
The H’mong market and local culture
The H’mong people who live in the hills around Sapa are known for colourful clothing and handicrafts. Many come into town to trade at the market, which is one of the best places to see their crafts without intruding on village life. Buy from the people themselves and be polite about photos; a smile and a request go a long way.
Fansipan
You can climb Fansipan on foot, which takes about two to four days with a guide depending on the route and weather, or ride the Sun World cable car to near the summit. In 2026 listings the adult round trip was about 850,000 to 950,000 dong, with a funicular or the last steps to the top extra. Go on a clear morning; the top is often in cloud.

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi
- Overnight train to Lao Cai: roughly 8 to 9 hours, departing Hanoi around 22:00, then a transfer of 30 to 60 minutes to Sapa by minibus or car. Fares range from about $25 to $50 depending on class and operator (2026 listings).
- Direct sleeper or limousine bus: about 5.5 to 6 hours, around $12 to $25 (2026 listings), dropping near the centre of Sapa.
Keep valuables with you on night transport.
When to go and what to pack
Sapa can get very cold. In winter, many hotels offer log fires in the room, and even in the shoulder months you will want a warm layer and a rain jacket. September to early November and March to May suit trekking best.
Where next
Sapa is part of any northern loop with Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh; the Vietnam destinations index has the rest of the country.
