What is Bao Loc?
Bao Loc is a small, cool city in Lam Dong province, about 190 km north-east of Saigon and 110 km from Da Lat. Since July 2025 it has been part of the enlarged Lam Dong, which also includes Da Lat, Mui Ne and the old Dak Nong province. At around 800 metres it is cooler than Saigon, with an average near 21–23°C, and surrounded by tea and coffee plantations.
Most travellers know it as a place they drive through. That’s a pity: the green hills around the town are among the prettiest in the highlands, and it’s quieter and cheaper than Da Lat. The Saigon to Da Lat road runs straight past it, which is why it works so well as a stop.
How long from Saigon to Bao Loc by car?
By private car, Saigon to Bao Loc takes 4 to 5 hours over about 190 km. The route leaves the city for Dong Nai, follows Highway 20 through Tan Phu and past Madagui, and climbs the Bao Loc pass into town. From Da Lat it’s 2¼ to 2¾ hours back down Highway 20 through Di Linh.
No expressway runs here yet; sections from Dau Giay are planned for 2027 onwards, and those dates have slipped before. What moves the range is the stretch out of Saigon, trucks on the climb, and rain. The Bao Loc pass has been a landslide point in heavy rain, and its road surface has needed repeated repairs, so in the wet months we’d rather arrive late than hurry.
A long climb is a good test of a driver. The standard we hold ours to is calm driving, sparing horn use, a clean non-smoking car and working seatbelts, because the second half of this road is bends.
Bus or private car to Bao Loc?
The bus is cheaper per person, and the car is easier with luggage or more than one passenger. Sleeper buses and limousine vans run from Saigon at about 180,000–550,000₫ a seat (Vexere, 2026), take 4½ to 5½ hours, and stop at a bus station rather than your hotel. Bao Loc is spread out, so you’d still need a taxi to the tea hills or the falls.
A private car collects you in Saigon, drops you at your hotel in Bao Loc, and can stop on the way at Madagui or Cat Tien. You know the driver and vehicle in advance, and the price is fixed. A round trip combined with Da Lat is the other common use: up Highway 20 to Bao Loc one day, on to Da Lat the next.
Things to do in Bao Loc
Bao Loc is for slow days: tea, coffee, waterfalls and views. Allow a night, or at least half a day.
Tam Chau tea hills
Tea is why Bao Loc exists. The Tam Chau hills, outside town, are rows of low green bushes on rolling red-brown hills, and some farms welcome visitors to walk the rows and taste.
Dambri falls
Dambri is a big waterfall in forest south-west of town, reached through a park with a cable car and other rides. Adult tickets are around 250,000₫ on reseller listings (2026), and the park closes in the afternoon, so check prices and hours before you go.
Coffee and silk
Coffee farms and silk workshops are scattered around the town. Many sell their own beans and tea, which are easy to carry home.
Madagui and the road to Bao Loc
Madagui Forest City, a forest and lake park at Da Huoai on the Lam Dong border, is the first big stop on Highway 20. It’s a day-out park for Saigon families more than a wilderness. The Nam Cat Tien National Park turn-off at Tan Phu is the other detour, and the two can be combined into one very long day or a night in the forest.
Where to stay in Bao Loc
Stay in or near the centre for restaurants and coffee shops, or out on the tea hills for views and quiet. Prices are noticeably lower than in Da Lat. At weekends and on public holidays rooms fill with Vietnamese tourists.
When to go
The dry season, from about November to April, gives the clearest days. From May to October there is afternoon rain, the hills are brilliant green, and the passes need care. Tet in early February 2027 and the long holidays at the end of April and early September are the busiest times on the road.
Onward from Bao Loc
Da Lat is 2¼–2¾ hours up the road, and Buon Ma Thuot is further north. Saigon is 4 to 5 hours back. To book any leg, change the From and To in the booking box; the prices for every route into Bao Loc are in the table above.
