Is Nha Trang good for diving?
Yes, for the price and the convenience. Nha Trang Bay is sheltered by its islands, which keeps silt down, and the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area offers coral gardens a 20 to 30 minute speedboat ride from the tourist port. The reefs are shallow and the diving suits beginners and macro photographers more than people chasing sharks or walls. Reviews and dive shops agree the best season is April to August.
When to dive
April to August is the peak: calm seas, little current, and visibility often 10 to 30 m. January to March has cooler water, around 25.5°C, and a bit more current. September to December is monsoon, and rough seas mean cancelled boats and poor visibility. Winter seas bring some surf instead, so the watersports page lists what to do when diving is off.
Hon Mun Marine Protected Area
Hon Mun was Vietnam’s first marine protected area. Entry carries a conservation fee of about 22,000₫ per adult in 2026 listings. Boats leave from the tourist port, usually with a stop for snorkelling. Expect rules on touching coral and sometimes restricted zones, so follow your guide.
Moray Beach
Known for giant morays, with good macro life around the rocks.
Madonna Rock
A rock with swim-throughs, popular for the topography.
Monkey Island
A calm, shallow site used for beginners and training dives.
What dives cost
Guided tour-boat dives are listed at about 500,000 to 800,000₫ per dive in 2026, with underwater photos around 300,000₫ extra. A three-day open-water course is more, and prices depend on the agency, group size and whether equipment is included. Cheap isn’t always safe, so compare inclusions.
Choosing a dive centre
There are many dive schools and quality varies. Check the agency affiliation (PADI or SSI), instructor credentials, group size, the boat’s safety equipment and whether the briefing and medical form are real. Pick an established name and check they follow proper safety procedure and have first-aid training. The PADI dive-centre locator lists active members.
Non-divers and snorkellers
Most Hon Mun trips also include snorkelling, and a glass-bottom boat costs about 60,000 to 100,000₫. If you want to stay dry, there’s seawalking. For more on boats, jet skis and wind sports, see the watersports page, and for the rest of the city the Nha Trang page.
