What is Phan Rang, and who is it for?
Phan Rang–Thap Cham is a town on the dry south-central coast, now in Khanh Hoa province after the 2025 reorganisation merged Ninh Thuan into it. It sits between Mui Ne and Nha Trang, and the name covers a bigger area: the town, Ninh Chu beach 5 km to the east, and the coast north to Vinh Hy bay.
It suits people who want a quieter, drier, less-developed coast than Nha Trang’s: Cham towers, vineyards, a clear bay and some of the best coastal scenery in the south, but few foreign tourists. It’s a good stop between Mui Ne and Nha Trang, or a destination of its own for a few nights.
How long from Saigon to Phan Rang by car?
A private car from Tan Son Nhat airport takes about 4 to 5 hours to Phan Rang, over roughly 330–360 km. Most of it is on the continuous expressway: from Saigon onto the Long Thanh–Dau Giay expressway, then the Dau Giay–Phan Thiet and Phan Thiet–Vinh Hao stretches, and on towards Cam Lam, leaving it for the last part into town. Our price includes tolls.
The old Highway 1 took six or seven hours. Saigon traffic is still the big variable: leave the city at 5 pm on a Friday and the first hour is slow. Because the drive is long, it’s worth being fussy about the car. Our drivers are held to a non-smoking, calm-driving standard, with a clean cabin filter and no overpowering air freshener, which matters over four hours.
From Mui Ne the drive is about 160 km and 2 to 2½ hours. From Nha Trang it’s about 100 km to Vinh Hy, with the airport at Cam Ranh in between. The driver meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign and goes to your hotel’s door. For where drivers wait at each terminal, see the Saigon airport transfers page.
Train, bus or private car to Phan Rang?
This is one of the busiest corridors on the south coast, so there are plenty of choices. The train runs from Saigon to Thap Cham in about 6 hours, about four times a day, from roughly 265,000₫ (October 2026). Buses and limousine vans run all day, with several hundred departures between them.
For one or two people with time and little luggage, either is a reasonable way to go. The catches are the same: they leave from Saigon station or a bus station across the city from the airport, at fixed times, and they drop you in Phan Rang town. Ninh Chu is a short taxi ride further. Vinh Hy is 40 km away.
A booked private car starts at the airport, goes to your hotel’s door and charges a fixed price per car. The car also takes about two hours less than the train. You know the car and the driver before you land, and the driver tracks your flight and waits up to 90 minutes at no charge.
Which car for Phan Rang
On a drive of four hours or more, choose by luggage and legroom. A sedan or electric VinFast is fine for two or three travellers. A family of four or five and tall travellers should take a 7-seater (Innova, Xpander or Fortuner). Groups can book the limousine van or the 16-seater. Child seats are available on request; add them when you book.
Things to do in Phan Rang
The coast here is dry and open, with the sea on one side and desert scrub on the other.
Ninh Chu beach
Ninh Chu is the town’s beach, about 5 km east, with a wide curve of sand and calm water most of the year. It’s where most of the hotels are, and the easiest base.
Vinh Hy bay
Vinh Hy bay is a small, sheltered bay about 40 km from Phan Rang and nearly 100 km from Nha Trang, backed by the hills of Nui Chua National Park. The coast road to it is among the most scenic in the south. Glass-bottom boats go out over the coral (about 700,000₫ for four people, quoted by VnExpress), and there are seafood restaurants on the water. February to October is the best season. Amanoi, a luxury resort, sits at the bay, but there are homestays and mid-range hotels too.
Hang Rai
Hang Rai is a rocky shore about 30–35 km from town, known for coral and rock pools and for sunsets. It’s close to the village of Thai An and its vineyards.
Po Klong Garai towers
Po Klong Garai is a group of Cham brick towers on a hill above town, built from the late 13th to the early 14th century. Go between about 7 and 9 am, before the sun is high. The nearby Cham villages, including Bau Truc, are known for their pottery.
Vineyards
The Ninh Thuan coast is Vietnam’s grape country, and the vineyards 7–15 km from town let you walk the rows and cut your own bunch. Harvests are heaviest around April–May, August–September and December–January.
Binh Hung island
Binh Hung island is a small fishing island reached by a short boat ride from the Cam Ranh coast, a good way north of Phan Rang. Travellers report that ID is checked at the port, and foreigners are sometimes turned away, so ask your hotel before you plan around it.
Eating in Phan Rang
Phan Rang is known for grilled goat and mutton, bánh căn (small rice-flour cakes cooked in clay moulds) and fresh grapes. Seafood is cheap and good. Ask the price per kilo before they cook it.
When to go to Phan Rang, and what can go wrong
Phan Rang is among the driest places in Vietnam. The dry season runs from about December to August, and February to October is best at Vinh Hy. September to November sees a little more rain, but also fewer visitors.
The main risk is the drive. Weekends and public holidays make the exit from Saigon slow, and Tết (early February in 2027) is the busiest travel time of the year. Leave early, or travel midweek.
Onward from Phan Rang
Mui Ne is 2 to 2½ hours back up the expressway, and Nha Trang about 1½–2 hours ahead; the Mui Ne to Nha Trang route runs past Phan Rang and can stop here. To book any leg, change the From and To in the booking box. The prices for every route into Phan Rang are in the table above.
