How this list works
These are twelve hotels we’d name when a friend asks where to stay, checked against the hotels’ own pages and recent listings in October 2026. It is an editorial list, not a ranking,. Every entry gives what the place is, one fact, who it suits and one limit. Rates are left out because they change by the week; check the hotel’s site for the date you want.
Where you stay matters more than which brand. The south coast resorts are a drive from the airport, the Hoi An and Da Nang coast is close to its airport, and the city hotels in Saigon and Hanoi put you in the middle of things. Pick the area first, then the hotel.
South Vietnam: the beach resorts
Flying into Saigon? A private car from the airport takes you straight to any of these. Drive times below are ranges from Tan Son Nhat; Friday evenings and holiday eves are the slow end.
Anantara Mui Ne Resort
A beachfront resort at the Phan Thiet end of the Mui Ne strip, on Nguyen Dinh Chieu street in Ham Tien. It suits couples and families who want a proper resort within reach of Saigon. The limit is the distance, 2½ to 4 hours each way, so it works better for a few nights than a long weekend. See the transfer page for the Anantara.
Centara Mirage Resort Mui Ne
A very large resort with 984 rooms and pool villas on the Mui Ne coast, themed as an “Explorer’s Playground” (Centara’s own description), with water slides and a kids’ area. It suits multigenerational families. The limit is the scale: if you want a quiet beach, you’d do better elsewhere on the Mui Ne strip.
Victoria Phan Thiet Beach Resort & Spa
A bungalow-style resort on a sandy beach at Km 9, Phu Hai, in the Phan Thiet direction rather than the busy middle of Mui Ne. It suits couples who want quiet and a low-rise feel. The limit is that restaurants and kite schools are a taxi ride away.
Azerai Ke Ga Bay
The former Princess d’An Nam, reopened as an Azerai resort in 2023 after a full refurbishment, on a long white-sand beach at Ke Ga (the resort describes it as about 2½ hours from Saigon; allow up to 4 on the road). It suits anyone who wants a quiet beach and a spa. The limit is that there is almost nothing else around, so the resort’s own restaurants are the evening.
The Grand Ho Tram (InterContinental)
A resort of 1,250 rooms or more on about 164 hectares at Ho Tram, with a casino, 2 km of private beach and The Bluffs, a Greg Norman golf course. It suits golfers and groups. The limit is that it is large and busy at weekends, and its free shuttle (from central Saigon, about 3 hours, guests only) is not an airport pickup.
Pullman Vung Tau
A big hotel on Back Beach at Vung Tau, with 352 rooms and suites (Accor and trip listings, 2026). It suits a short weekend from Saigon, since the drive is the shortest of the beach resorts at about 1½ to 2¼ hours. The limit is that Back Beach is a town beach with crowds on weekends, not a remote one.
Six Senses Con Dao
A beach villa resort at Dat Doc Beach on Con Dao, with about 50 pool villas and residences. It suits couples who want an island with no crowds, and the island is reached by air from Saigon. The limit is exactly that: flights are small and weather can cancel them, so keep a spare day.
Saigon
Park Hyatt Saigon
On Lam Son Square, across from the Opera House in District 1, and opened in July 2005 (Hyatt newsroom). It suits first-time visitors who want to walk to the main sights. The limit is that the area is expensive and busy, and traffic into the centre is slow at rush hour. See our Saigon guide.
The centre
InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort
Designed by the architect Bill Bensley and opened on 1 June 2012, with 197 rooms and suites on Son Tra peninsula and 700 m of private beach. It is about 30 minutes from Da Nang airport and about 45 minutes from Hoi An (Wikipedia, October 2026). It suits couples and honeymooners. The limit is that it is on a hillside, so a day in Da Nang or Hoi An means a car.
The Nam Hai, Hoi An
Long known as Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, with about 100 villas, many with private pools, on the coast between Da Nang and Hoi An. It suits those who want a villa resort near the old town. The limit is the setting: it is a beach resort rather than an old-town stay, so you leave it to see Hoi An.
The north
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Opened in August 1901 at 15 Ngo Quyen Street, with 358 rooms in two wings, and a 1964 air-raid bunker under the Bamboo Bar that guests can tour (Wikipedia, October 2026). It suits anyone who wants a landmark near the Opera House and the lakes. The limit is that you pay for history, and a modern boutique hotel may offer more for less in the Old Quarter. See Hanoi for areas.
Capella Hanoi
A 47-room boutique hotel opened in 2021 on Ly Thai To Street, in the old French quarter, with rooms styled after different personalities, from actors and musicians to opera designers (eatliveescape, April 2021). It suits couples who like design. The limit is the size: a small hotel has little else on site.
Choosing between them
For a long weekend from Saigon, Vung Tau and Ho Tram are the shortest drives. For a week by the sea, pick Mui Ne, Ke Ga or Con Dao. For a city stay, Park Hyatt and the Metropole are in the centre of their cities. For a beach holiday in the centre, the Da Nang and Hoi An coast is close to its airport.
Season matters as much. The south coast and Phu Quoc are at their best from about November to April, the Da Nang and Hoi An coast from about February to August, and Hanoi in spring and autumn. Our Vietnam destinations page has the month-by-month view.
Prices are not listed here. Resort rates swing with the season and with Tết, and room-only rates on booking sites differ from the hotel’s own. The one number worth checking is the transfer: a resort car on a south coast road often costs about twice what a private car does.
If you’re staying elsewhere
This is a short list. Hotels in Hanoi, Hoi An and Hue each have a where-to-stay section in their guides, by neighbourhood. For the rest of the country, the destination guides above explain the areas.
